Tap to Pay with a Contactless Bank Card
Easily pay to ride any Bay Area transit agency using your contactless credit, debit or prepaid bank card. Just look for the contactless symbol on your plastic card or pay using your default payment card in your mobile wallet. Accepted payments include Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover.
Please note: You will be charged the full adult fare when using a contactless bank card to pay for transit.
Common Questions
Look for the contactless symbol on the front or back of your bank card. If you see this symbol, you can use your contactless bank card to pay for transit. If your card is not contactless, you can add it to your mobile wallet and pay for transit by tapping on with your phone.
The following are accepted contactless bank cards: Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover.
- Remove the physical payment card from your wallet—or select the card you would like to use on your mobile wallet—and center your card or device over the "Tap Here" graphic on the screen.
- On a successful tap, lights and a "Travel OK" screen will appear on the machine.
- The tap will not register if you place your card or device too low or high on the screen.
If you have more than one card in your mobile wallet, you must choose which card you want to use before you tap it at a Clipper reader. Otherwise, the Clipper reader will use your wallet's default payment card.
iPhone users can designate their default payment card with Express Transit in Apple Wallet. You can do this directly in the Apple Wallet app by tapping the payment card you'd like to use and tapping the three dots in the top right corner.
Android users can designate their default payment in Google Wallet. You can do this directly in the Google Wallet app by choosing the card you want, tapping "Details" at the bottom and selecting "Make default for tap to pay" for contactless payments.
You will not receive a refund if a different card is charged.
With group travel, each person traveling must have a unique contactless bank card.
