Riding with Clipper
Tag your card every time you board. Learn why you need to tag even if you have a pass.
Note: On cable cars, the conductor will use a handheld card reader to tag your card.
Paying with Clipper
Muni accepts the following on a Clipper card:

Free Muni for all Youth: Effective August 15th, all youth 18 years and younger can ride Muni service for free, with the exception of Cable Car. San Francisco youth who required access to Cable Car for regular travel can contact the SFMTA to request a pass.

Cash value: For single rides. Clipper customers get discounts of 25 cents for adults and 10 cents for seniors and disabled riders on Muni buses and light rail. You need a cash value balance of at least $2 on an adult Clipper card to board. You need $1.25 on a Senior or RTC Clipper card to board if you are paying with cash value.

Monthly “M” Adult Pass: Unlimited rides on all Muni vehicles for one calendar month plus the first 3 days of the following month. Available for sale from the 17th of the prior month through the 16th of the month.

Monthly “A” Adult Fast Pass + BART within San Francisco: Unlimited rides on all Muni vehicles and on BART within San Francisco (trips outside of these stations are charged full fare). Available for sale from the 17th of the prior month through the 16th of the month.

Discount monthly pass: Unlimited rides for one calendar month plus the first 3 days of the following month for senior and disabled riders on all Muni vehicles. Available for sale from the 17th of the prior month through the 16th of the month.

1-, 3- and 7-day passports: Unlimited rides for adult, youth, senior and disabled riders on all Muni vehicles for the specified time period.
Transferring with Clipper
Clipper knows when to give you free and discounted rides when you transfer.
Note: Transfers do not include discounts on cable cars.
- Muni transferring to Muni
- Unlimited free rides for 2 hours from first boarding Muni. Between 8:30 p.m. and 5 a.m., unlimited late-night transfers are in effect. Learn more about unlimited late-night transfers.
- AC Transit transferring to Muni
- Discounted ride within 2 hours of boarding AC Transit.
- BART transferring to Muni
- Discounted ride within 1 hour of exiting BART in San Francisco (excludes Daly City Station).
- BART Daly City Station transferring to Muni
- Up to two free rides on Muni routes 14R, 28, 54 or 57 within 24 hours, as long as the first ride is taken within 23 hours of exiting BART Daly City Station.
- Caltrain transferring to Muni
- Discounted ride within 1 hour of tagging off Caltrain in Zone 1.
- Golden Gate Ferry transferring to Muni
- Discounted ride within 2 hours of tagging your card on Golden Gate Ferry.
- Golden Gate Transit transferring to Muni
- Discounted ride within 2 hours of tagging off Golden Gate Transit.
- SamTrans transferring to Muni
- Discounted ride within 2 hours of boarding SamTrans.
- San Francisco Bay Ferry transferring to Muni
- Discounted ride within 2 hours of tagging off San Francisco Bay Ferry in San Francisco.
